Creating a Custom Fine art Studio Tabular array

Every time I post a photograph of my studio, I get multiple messages and comments about my tabular array. So many of you lot have begged for this weblog post and now it's finally here! Earlier I had this table, I call back feeling like I had random baskets, crates, bags, etc with supplies shoved all over the place. At the fourth dimension, I also had a table that was too short to piece of work on while standing. I began searching for art studio ideas on Pinterest and saw several inspiring spaces with desks built around Ikea Alex flat drawers. Check out my Dreamy Art Studios Board to see some of my favorite studio storage ideas.

I decided on two long tables on casters so I could move them effectually in the studio and separate them if needed. I wanted Ikea Alex drawers on each side of both tables, which meant I needed four of them. Each table is 60" long, and so I knew there would be infinite between the drawers for some storage- and you can never have plenty storage then- bonus space. The drawers are are 26.25" wide, which was a bit abrasive because nosotros had to utilise a separate canvas of plywood for each slice (since plywood is 48" wide, you lot tin can only go 1 26.25" cut out of each piece which meant a flake more $$, but I definitely think it was worth information technology to have the wood framing the drawers be a perfect fit and the exact width of the drawer units.

My dad helped me build the table exactly the way I had dreamed it. He is the Scrap to my Joanna. ;)

Lets get technical for a sec

Considering of the casters on the lesser piece of plywood, the drawers couldn't sit flat because of the screws/nuts. And so we had to create shims for the drawers to sit on.

Also- if y'all do this- get Actually potent casters that will scroll smoothly for this heavy table. Unfortunately in my new studio with these padded mats, I tin't roll my tabular array around much because it messes up the mats. But having the table on casters is absolutely worth information technology!

Additional paper storage

The table wasn't quite every bit tall as I wanted information technology to exist with just the casters and drawers, then we created a flat storage shelf to a higher place the drawers. I opted to not put the divider in the center so that I would have one larger space for large paper. I overload this area and couldn't live without it. You can also come across the storage infinite between the drawers for small-scale/medium pieces.

We added some trim board to embrace the edges of the plywood and make it a piffling prettier, then painted it white- with the aforementioned perfect white paint I employ for my studio walls.

The Messy Side & The Business Side

I one side of my tabular array I keep art supplies- paint, ink, chalk, charcoal, paper, works in progress, painting scraps, brushes, thread, etc. On the other side of my table I keep my "role" supplies- mat board, pre-cutting mats, clear bags, painters tape, paper cutter, concern cards, computer paper, etc. Also the business side faces my more than traditional desk where I use my computer, do my books, etc. It actually helped me to have two split up spaces like this. In my onetime studio I didn't have space for this, so I simply used half my table for business and half for mess, but lets be real- that wasn't e'er the example and my computer has some paint smudges and things get moved effectually constantly depending on what I am focusing on.

Organizing your art supplies

My top drawer is chalk and colored pencils- piece of cake to grab while I am working at my table and the furthest reach for my toddler. Although- she can reach them now & knows non to play chalk without mommy.

I similar to organize my paint by keeping absurd colors in one drawer and warm colors in the drawer underneath. These flat drawers make information technology and then like shooting fish in a barrel to see all the colors and labels. The bottom three drawers on the Ikea Alex set are a little deeper, then thats where I keep my acrylic inks and palettes, newspaper scraps, and larger items.

think about where you do your piece of work.

In the starting time stages of a painting, I piece of work flat on the flooring, later I work standing at my tabular array, and finally finish the piece on the wall. So I needed my supplies to exist nigh all of these areas. I work on the floor correct abreast the fine art supply drawers and so its easy to pull out supplies and put them back in the drawers when my little girls are in the studio with me. I tin can also access the supplies easily when I am standing at my table.

It took a bit of time to become accustomed to my new studio and to notice my natural habits- where I would work standing, where I would spread out on the floor, and how to adapt everything. And then in the early on stages of organization, take your time. Then if you notice you need to motility things around again, you can always adapt.

I also take drawers for the following items:

Aircraft: Packing tape, aircraft labels, frail & "this fashion upward" aircraft stickers, custom stickers, cards, and washi tape.

PRINTS: 3 drawers for 3 sizes of document sleeves and backer board from clearbags.com for prints or works on paper.

PALETTES- I absolutely couldnt live without my Sta-Wet palette. And then I have a drawer to go on the sponges, papers, and the palette fits as well, although its usually on the tabular array top.

OFFICE SUPPLIES, WIRING SUPPLIES, SOME Arts and crafts SUPPLIES FOR MY Girl, iii-iv DRAWERS OF PAPER SCRAPS AND WORKS IN PROGRESS.

Bonus info:

I also become asked a lot about these flooring mats. I bought them as a temporary solution to having amass flooring in my studio infinite with a itch toddler (ouch!), but I really really love them. They're soft on my feet, adept for my dorsum, great if yous drop things (all the fourth dimension), kind to the corners of my paintings, and perfect for my picayune girls running, crawling, falling, & playing in the studio with me. I will say though- they never feel squeaky clean. I run our Roomba in my studio often to pick up dust, but they even so get our feet dirty. I bought these at Harbor Freight Tools because it was the all-time price I could discover. But they do sell these interlocking flooring mats on Amazon also. They even have some that wait similar wood flooring. I've always wondered if I should have done that.

If you lot want these to take upwardly your entire floor, they exercise aggrandize in heat and volition begin to buckle if you oasis't left infinite around the edges of the room. The showtime summer with these in the studio I had to trim them all around the edge of the room and so they would lay flat once again and had to do additional trimming recently for Summertime # 2.
